Robert Delaunay and Orphism
Robert Delaunay and Orphism

A French painter from the beginning of the 20th century, Robert Delaunay was first influenced by Neo-Impressionism and later by Cubism and Abstract Art. Drawing inspiration from light in particular, Delaunay, along with his wife Sonia, founded the Orphic movement, a branch of Cubism and one of the major avant-garde art movements of the early 20th century. His work is based on the theories of the colour spectrum, his artistic aim being to achieve pictorial harmony through colour alone, without the need to represent figurative elements.
