The Latin Quarter
The Latin Quarter

From the Quai Saint-Michel, with its panoramic view on Notre-Dame, to the Luxembourg Gardens, the Latin Quarter is the quintessential Parisian neighborhood for students and scholars. Its name is closely linked to their presence, derived from the fact that in the Middle Ages, university classes were conducted only in Latin. Around the Sorbonne, its historic heart, the district still abounds with schools, universities and bookshops. It is also replete with churches and monuments, including the Panthéon, the Hôtel de Cluny, the Odéon theater and Saint-Séverin church, which contribute to its rich heritage and draw crowds of tourists to the area all year long.
