Eugène Atget, Paris
Eugène Atget, Paris

Exhibition at the Carnavalet Museum from 25 April to 29 July 2012.

A self-taught photographer, Eugène Atget is now acknowledged as one of the founders of modern photography. At the start of the 20th century, he photographed typical street scenes in Paris, the city's tradespeople, different districts and striking architecture. His work captured all the charm of the Paris urban environment and some of its long since disappeared landmarks, and was to inspire the Surrealists. His photographs, originally intended for the artists, finally attracted the attention of the National Library of France which acquired them for their documentary interest. As he himself said in a letter dated November 12th, 1920 to Paul Léon, director of the Fine Arts Academy, "I can honestly say that I have captured all of old Paris".
