Cima da Conegliano, Master of the Venetian Renaissance
Cima da Conegliano, Master of the Venetian Renaissance
Exhibition at the Musée du Luxembourg from 5 April 2012 to 15 July 2012.

Nothing indicated that Cima da Conegliano (1459-1517) was to influence the Venetian school of painting of his day, and yet the end of the 15th and start of the 16th centuries saw this small-time painter rising to join the ranks of the great masters. He never forgot his place of birth however, as shown in the green and mountainous landscapes forming the background of his compositions. First inspired by his elders and then by younger artists such as Giorgione, his original paintings would later go on to influence his contemporaries and next generation painters including Lorenzo Lotto, Sebastiano del Piombo and Titian. The most beloved of Sacred Art subjects, the Madonna and Child, is a recurring theme in his work, and his precision and fine detail bring his subjects to life as does his mastery of oil painting techniques, which were relatively new to the Venetian school at the time. This exhibition marks the first French showing of works on loan from Italy.
