The Virgin and Child with Saint Anne - Leonardo da Vinci's ultimate masterpiece
Exhibition from 29 March to 25 June 2012 at the Musée du Louvre, Paris.
Leonardo da Vinci's masterpiece The Virgin and Child with Saint Anne, restored with the aid of the Centre for Research and Restoration of Museums of France, is the centrepiece of an exceptional exhibition. The slow and complex genesis of the painting dates back to 1501, when it was first mentioned in Isabella d'Este's correspondence. From then on, Leonardo da Vinci never stopped trying to improve this ambitious work, which was left unfinished when he died in 1519. Composition sketches, preparatory drawings, and landscape studies illustrate the long meditation and reveal the various successive solutions contemplated by the master.
The Virgin and Child with Saint Anne is the true culmination of the artist's many and diverse explorations of nature and art.
