The conquest of Algeria
The conquest of Algeria

Exhibition "L'Algérie 1830-1962 avec Jacques Ferrandez" from 16 May to 29 July 2012, Musée de l'Armée, Paris.

Algeria, throughout its chequered history, has been in contact with a number of different civilisations. African, Mediterranean, European and Eastern cultures have all in some ways influenced the history of the country and left their mark, as various remains and artefacts from the different periods reveal. From the Roman conquest right up to French colonial rule, Algeria has always put up a strong resistance to those who coveted her territory. Legendary leaders have marked these conflicts and uprisings, among them the Kahina, Massinissa, Jugurtha, Lalla Fadhma N'Soumer and the Emir Abd el-Kader, all of them contributing to the myth of the orient.
