The rise of sport in the 20th century
First introduced with gymnastics and physical education in the 19th century, sport began to soar in the 20th century and became a real social phenomenon.
Previously reserved for the wealthy, sports were more accessible and became a symbol of education, strength and patriotism. Beyond institutional constraints, sport also became synonymous with relaxation, pleasure and freedom. Competitions, events and the rise of outdoor sports allowed the population to share, come together and go beyond their limits.
