Museum of African, Oceanic and American Indian Arts in Marseille (MAAOA)
Located in the Vieille Charité Centre, this museum houses superb and original collections that include donations made by distinguished collectors: masks, statues and reliquaries from Africa donated by Pierre Guerre (1910-1978), a collection of folk art from Mexico (masks, ceramics, string art, trees of life and sculptures), acquired by the filmmaker François Reichenbach during his many travels, and magnificent American Indian feather adornments, mostly donated by Marcel Heckenroth (1912-2008). The visit ends with a collection from Oceania donated by Doctor Gastaut (1915-1995), which is composed of human skulls that have been sculpted, painted and engraved or covered in clay.
The original and magical works on display in the museum will delight adults and children alike.
